Explore the uniquely soft lines that drypoint etching can give you. Each morning will begin with a drawing exercise that will lead us into the process of making prints. We will delve into the use of colour, inking, and wiping with approaches that are unique to this beautiful technique. A variety of materials can be used as a matrix. Beginning with transparent Duralar film then utilizing repurposed plastic from packaging and even tetra packs. For this technique, neither acids nor chemicals are needed! Gain hands-on experience working with the studio etching presses as you learn press setups for printing, press operation, and how to register multiple layers of an image. The studio will provide inks. Other supplies may be purchased from the instructor at cost. There will be a supply list provided on what to bring with you. Pat Beaton is a visual artist working in printmaking, installation, and community-engaged public art. Central to her work is her exploration and questioning of the many ways that human and non-human life co-exist in urban, rural, and wilderness environments of BC and Washington. Her art practice and teaching reflect her evolving understanding of the relationships we have with the land. Pat’s print work has included relief printmaking (linocut, woodcut), collagraphs, drypoint, lift prints, and etching. She has often pushed the boundaries of what a print can be by transforming printed materials into large-scale installations. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She currently lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Lummi Island, Washington with her partner Doug. She feels restored by being outdoors and is grateful for this opportunity to be living in close company with the forests and waters of the West Coast.
